Creating new look for school

The principal of a school that was damaged by fire has spoken about plans to build replacement facilities.

A fire broke out at Freeston Academy in Normanton just as pupils arrived to collect their GCSE results in August. A teaching block and the school’s library were damaged in the blaze and had to be demolished.

The Academy has now submitted plans for a new independent learning centre with classrooms and a library. A special educational needs department will also be created at the front of the school alongside additional parking for staff and visitors.

Principal Mike Tarr said: “We’re really excited about the new facilities we will be providing our students and staff.

“Everybody has coped admirably since the blaze – caused by an accident - robbed the academy of some important facilities, including the library. We are determined to create a striking new look to the front of the Academy and state-of-the-art facilities that our students and staff deserve.”

The academy plans to commence building work in July.
