A press office spokesman said two of the men, one with a knife and one with a hammer, jumped over the counter. The third man, who also had a knife, threatened staff members.

The men, who had their faces covered but were believed to be white, made off from the scene in a dark coloured Volkswagen Golf with several thousand pounds worth of cigarettes.

The men all spoke with local accents.

Detective Constable James Eve, of Wakefield CID, said: “This experience has understandably left the staff members involved traumatised and we are doing all we can to trace those involved.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of this offence who saw anything suspicious, or a vehicle matching this description to call Wakefield CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 101.”
