Thomas Rothery and Brogan Regan targeted the house on Manor Drive, Ossett, in the early hours of June 11 this year as the family who lived there were sleeping.

Leeds Crown Court heard the pair got into the property through a conservatory before taking car keys, an iPad, a Bose speaker and a whisky bottle containing around £200 worth of coins.

It was reported stolen and police officers saw it being driven on Dewsbury Road, Gomersal, a short time later.

The car was driven at high speed on the wrong side of the road as the pair headed towards Bradford.

Police tried to use a stinger device to stop the car on Tong Street but the driver managed to swerve out of the way.

The BMW reached 100mph in a 40mph area on Wakefield Road.

It was driven at 70mph through Bradford city centre and through temporary red traffic lights at 90mph on Thornton Road.

Miss Pryke said the car then braked sharply and both defendants jumped out as it was still moving.

They ran off but were caught by officers who gave chase.

The prosecutor said the homeowner, his partner and her young daughter were in the house at the time of the break-in.

Miss Pryke said: "He and his partner have been worried and anxious since the incident and it has affected their work and sleeping pattern.

"(The victim) doesn't think the point where he feels secure in his own home will ever come."

Rothery was the subject of a suspended prison sentence and Regan was out of custody on licence at the time of the incident.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to burglary and theft.

Rothery also pleaded guilty to criminal damage, threatening behaviour and a further count of theft in relation to other offences.

The court heard he jumped on the bonnet of his former girlfriend's car and used a rock to try to smash the windscreen as she was driving on Market Street, Shipley, in June last year.

In November he stole a bicycle worth £1,000 from outside the Old House At Home pub in Shipley.

Giles Bridge, for Rothery, said his client had been diagnosed with ADHD and committed the offences at a time when he was homeless.

Christopher Styles, for Regan, said his client was still a young man and intended to turn his life around when released from custody.

Rothery, 20, of Coates Street, Bradford, was sentenced to three years in a young offender institution. Regan, 20, of Rowantree Drive, Bradford, was sentenced to 27 months.
