Eight canaries have been stolen from a garden aviary in Methley in what police believe was a targeted attack.

The break-in happened at a house off Church Lane shortly before 1am on Thursday May 2. CCTV images show three people apparently forcing their way into the breeze block aviary.

Seven of the the birds taken were common canaries, and the eighth was a Gloucestershire canary, which has a distinctive dark collar marking. All were home-bred by the owners.

PC Andy Gaitley, of Garforth, Kippax, Swillington and Methley neighbourhood policing team (NPT), said: “We have had nothing like similar in the area and so it does seem that they have come to target the canaries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the NPT on 0113 232 2015, or call the non-emergency number 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
