Drunken thug left victim needing life saving surgery

A thug who left a man with near-fatal injuries after punching him to the ground during a drunken and unprovoked street attack has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Kyle Ahmad’s assault left 55-year-old victim Michael Peters with serious brain injuries. His life was saved thanks to surgeons after he suffered bleeding to his brain when his head struck the kerb.

Leeds Crown Court heard Ahmad, 22, of Greenfield Crescent, Wakefield, had spent ten hours drinking in pubs before carrying out the attack in Huddersfield in the early hours of September 15 2013.

The burly rugby player approached Mr Peters as he was about to get into a taxi with his wife. Mr Peters was lifted off his feet from the single punch. The victim was forced to give evidence before a jury as Ahmad refused to admit his guilt and tried to “brazen it out” by taking the case to trial.

He was found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Recorder Duncan Smith told Ahmad: “If you have not heard about one-punch manslaughter I suggest you read it up because that man came close to losing his life.”
