Houses evacuated after crash on Wakefield street

Houses in Wakefield had to be evacuated following a police chase in which a vehicle crashed on a residential street.

Officers cordoned off Plumpton Road, off Westgate, last night shortly after 9pm when a vehicle being chased by police collided with and ruptured a gas main.

Police says a residents of surrounding properties had to leave their homes while the gas supply was made safe.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said: "We all heard a car screech and a bang. We looked out and firearms officers had one lad on his knees. Another ran off but they caught him just further down.

"About three unmarked cars, a few police cars and then a fire engine had to come out. They evacuated some houses."

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, police have confirmed.
