The illegal crop was found at the disused Chinese restaurant on Denby Dale Road at about 10.45pm on Saturday evening following reports of suspicious activity there.

A police cordon was put in place and enquiries were ongoing there during Sunday.

Formerly known as Jumbo all-you-can-eat buffet, it was boarded up in recent years.

The bust comes after police say they have managed to uncover more than £1.5 million worth of cannabis in the district since the start of the year.

Anyone who has information about cannabis production at the premises or anywhere else in the city can contact the Wakefield Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.

Information can also be given in confidence to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
