The second incident happened overnight on June 1 where a lock was damaged in order to gain entry to the quarry, where the life rings were stolen. Enquiries are ongoing.

Inspector Phillippa Child of Wakefield East and South East Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “With the recent good weather we’ve be having we are very concerned that people have been breaking into the quarry to go for a swim.

“Swimming in this reservoir is extremely dangerous.

“During the break in two life rings were stolen, which could potentially save a life if people got into difficulty in the water.”
