Man jailed for having kitchen knife on city centre street

A man who said he carried a knife for protection after saying he been previously assaulted has been jailed.

Andrew Scott, 43, had twice been found to be carrying an offensive weapons before, and was subsequently jailed on both occasions.

Held on remand, he appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Friday for the latest charge after being found carrying a 5" kitchen with a serrated edge knife near Wakefield city centre.

Outlining the case for the prosecution, Joseph Bell told the court that patrolling officers had spotted Scott searching through a vehicle on Arundel Street, shortly before 3am on September 23.

When they asked him what he was doing he said he was looking through his brother's car, but were suspicious of Scott, so searched him.

The knife was found in the waistband of his trousers. On his way into custody he told the officers that he carried the knife because he had been stabbed several times before.

He gave a no-comment interview when reached the police station.

The court was told Scott, of Kingsway, Drighlington, had 28 convictions for 67 offences, including the the possession of an offensive weapon in 2011 and 2016, for which he jailed for three months and six months respectively.

With no legal representative, Scott told the judge that he and his brother had been attacked in 2017.

He was given 30 weeks' jail.
