Chief Superintendent Mark McManus, district commander of Wakefield District Police said: “PC Wales and PC Sherriff are a credit to West Yorkshire Police and the police force in general.

“Not only did they put their lives on the line to apprehend a dangerous individual but they saved the lives of a mother, father and daughter that day.

“These officers showed outstanding bravery and I am so proud of them for going above and beyond their duty.”

Corley was jailed for 10 years in October for the unprovoked and inexplicable attack on the family.

He burst into the house, just doors down from where he lived, around lunchtime on April 2.

He stabbed haulage worker, Lee Morgan 13 times before trying to get to his wife Nicola and their child who had hidden themselves in an upstairs bedroom, but managed to keep him out until the police arrived.

Lee has since made a recovery, but Nicola said the family still have no idea why Corley targeted them.

She said: “There’s not enough thanks that can be said to show our gratitude.

“These two officers put their lives on the line and went above and beyond.”
