Orgreave festival 30 years since miners’ strike

A mass picnic and festival is being held today 30 years since the most violent episode in the 1984-5 miners’ strike.

Campaigners seeking an inquiry into events at the Orgreave coking plant are holding the festival close to where police clashed with striking miners at a mass picket on June 18, 1984.

Ninety-five miners were arrested at the picket, but subsequent court cases against them collapsed.

The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign is calling for a full public inquiry into policing at the picket.

Today’s event at Catcliffe Recreation Ground, near Rotherham, runs from 11am-6pm.

Entertainment includes theatre, live music, an exhibition, acoustic tent, children’s activities, food and real ale.
