Police seek witnesses to suspected arson attack at Thornes Park Stadium

Emergency services were called at 7.25pm yesterday to reports of a fire at Thornes Park Stadium on Horbury Road, Wakefield.

It is understood that a fire had started at an outdoor seating area of the stadium and spread to an overhanging section of roof.

The stadium is used for training by some of the British gymnastics squad, including British tumbling champion Elliot Brown, and children were training when the fire broke out.

Speaking after the fire, one parent told the Express that the incident was "like a scene from the movies."

The stadium remains closed today.

Officers investigating the blaze are now hoping to hear from anyone who witnessed the fire or saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the fire.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are investigating after a report of arson at Thornes Park Stadium on Horbury Road, Wakefield last night.

"Fire crews were called at 19.25 to reports that a fire had broken out at an outdoor seating area in the stadium.

"Officers are following a number of active lines of enquiries.

"Anyone with any information about the fire or saw anything suspicious around Thornes Park stadium yesterday evening is asked to contact police on 101 or use the live chat facility at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/contactus quoting log 1644 of Wednesday 26 February."
