Police staff to go on strike over pay

Staff including 999 call takers, police community support officers and scenes of crime officers will take part in the planned 24-hour stoppage from 7am.

Talks are being held to try and avert the strike, which was called after Unison members rejected a one per cent pay offer.

The union had asked for a rise of three per cent, or £500 each, whichever amount was highest for its members.

Unison national officer Ben Priestley said: “Industrial action is a last resort and the initial talks with the employers were encouraging.

“We are hopeful that we can resolve the dispute and avoid any disruption.”

A strike was first called on December 22 but was suspended by Unison so negotiations could be held.

Mr Priestley added: “The rules around industrial action mean we have had to call another strike day to ensure we are still able to take strike action should the talks break down.”
