Police warning over cruel scam targeting the elderly

The victim, from Allerton Bywater, called police after he was contacted by a man claiming to be from the 'Police Fraud Department'.

The suspect asked the victim to withdraw a large sum of money from their bank account before promising to send someone to the house to collect it, providing a reference number.

Suspecting it was a scam, the elderly resident called the police and two PCSOs quickly arrived at the victim's house.

When the suspect arrived to collect the money from the victim, he was arrested on suspicion of Fraud by False Representation.

The East Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Team has urged anyone in Leeds who has received similar calls to contact them.

Sergeant David Lund of the Inner East Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The victim's suspicions and quick response from the local PCSOs has resulted in the quick arrest of the suspect preventing a significant financial loss to the victim.

“We urge any members of the public who may have received similar calls of this nature in the area to contact the police on 101 as soon as possible.

“Criminals target some of the most vulnerable members of our communities for personal gain and we will continue to work with our communities and partners to protect the most vulnerable from such offences."
