The 74-year-old serial killer feared he might contract coronavirus in prison before he was rushed to A&E at University Hospital in North Durham, The Sun newspaper reported.

According to reports, Sutcliffe has been handcuffed to a bed in a private room and is being treated away from other patients at the hospital.

He was convicted in 1981 of murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven others.across Yorkshire and the North West between 1975 and 1980.

He is serving 20 concurrent sentences of life imprisonment, which was increased to a whole life order in 2010. After a long spell in Broadmoor Hospital, he was transferred to maximum security prison HMP Frankland in 2016.

He was taken to hospital on Wednesday (October 28).

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “We don’t comment on individual prisoners.”
