Thieves escape with pop, crisps and tea towels after break-in at bowling club

Members of Smirththwaite Park Bowling Club found the damage on Thursday, October 1, after bolt cutters were used to get through a vandal-proof fence and double glazed windows were smashed.

Club press secretary Paul Dainton said no cash, alcohol, cigarettes or lawn mowers had been left in the club overnight.

He said: “This mindless wanton vandalism has cost approximately £3,000 worth of damage to rob three cans of pop, two packets of crisps and the club’s washing up tea towels.

“It must have taken the intruders more time than it can ever have been worth.”

Mr Dainton said it was the second time the bowling club, which works with nearby schools and holds bowls open days in one of Normanton’s most deprived areas, had been broken into during the past three years.”
