UPDATE: Wakefield city centre incident referred to IPCC

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man found with serious neck injuries in Wakefield city centre.

But the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

A 44-year-old Polish man was found with serious neck and leg injuries in Quebec Street, at about 1pm on Tuesday

He was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in Pinderfields Hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Elizabeth Belton of West Yorkshire Police Protective Services, said: “Enquiries into how this man came to receive these serious injuries are ongoing but current indications are there were no suspicious circumstances.

“Officers are waiting to speak to the man as his condition improves. Due to the male having previous recent contact with the police the matter has been referred to the IPCC.”
