Warning after burglars target homes with unlocked doors across Wakefield

Police have warned residents not to leave doors and windows open following a string of burglaries across the Wakefield district.

Officers said they had been made aware of a number of burglaries which had occurred after homeowners left doors unlocked.

This included an incident where a man in Hemsworth left his door ajar while visiting a local shop and returned to find that £40 had been stolen from his wallet.

In Wrenthorpe, one household reported a laptop, camera and two wallets containing cash and cards were stolen when a back door was left unlocked overnight.

And in Wakefield city centre, a laptop and iPod were stolen from a room in shared accommodation when the door was left unlocked overnight.

Crime Prevention Officer Glenda Butts said: "Think about open doors and windows - It’s important to remember which doors and windows have been unlocked and opened throughout the day.

"Thieves will be on the look-out for any sneak-in opportunities.

"Don’t leave bags, laptops and keys just inside the door and on display. Keep doors locked during the day as well as at night.

"Make it part of your night time routine to double check all doors and windows before going to bed."
