Warning over bogus council tax refund calls

Bogus callers who claim to be offering council tax rebates have been targeting households in a scam to get hold of bank details.

Wakefield Council has warned householders to be vigilant after people received phone calls and text messages from fraudsters who claimed to be from the government website gov.uk

They asked for personal details, claiming a council tax refund would be paid.

Anybody who has given out their details is urged to contact their bank and call the police on 101.

Graham Stokes, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for modern public services, said: “If you receive a phone call or visit from someone claiming to be from the council and you suspect the person is not genuine, do not give them any personal details and contact the council on 0345 8 506 506.

“I’d urge residents to share this information with friends, neighbours and relatives so that no-one falls victims to this kind of scam.

“We will never phone or text you to ask for your bank details.”

Wakefield Council said people could request a refund or have cash deducted from their next bill if they were owed money back.
