Where to watch the Tour de Yorkshire in Wakefield

The activities, will take place before, during and after the event on Sunday, May 3.

The build up to the race begins in the city centre, where a hub is the perfect place to see the pre-race rituals like team arrivals and registration.

The city centre will be decked out in yellow and blue bunting, which are the colours of the Tour.

Then a group schoolchildren will cycle the first kilometer of the race at around 11.45am around the city, which will be decked with yellow and blue bunting - the Tour’s colours.

The professionals will start racing at 12.15pm outside Wakefield Cathedral. Riders will have a 4km neutralised section before the official race start at Agbrigg Road on the A61 at 12.30pm, just past The Hepworth Wakefield.

Riders will pass Castle Grove Park, Manygates Centre, Sandal Castle and Newmillerdam before leaving the district at Woolley.

A spectator hub at Castle Grove Park at Manygates, is hosting a variety of cycling activities, music and entertainment during and after the race.

Coun Les Shaw, cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “I am very proud that Wakefield is hosting the start of the final day of the Tour de Yorkshire, and I’d encourage all residents to join in the fun and show their support for what I’m sure will be a memorable event.

“There’s a great opportunity for everyone to make this a day-long celebration.

“I’d urge people to come into the city centre to give the riders a warm Wakefield welcome, and to take the opportunity to see the exciting build up to the start of the race.

“Alternatively, why not head off to Castle Grove Park, Manygates Centre for family friendly entertainment or visit the celebrations being hosted by the Hepworth Wakefield?”

At Manygates adults and children will have the chance to try out different bikes and to join in an organised cycling event. You can also test out your stamina on stationary bikes.

The day will also feature BMX riding skills from the 3SIXTY display team, and the Five Towns FM Bus will be playing music.

Meanwhile The Hepworth, Wakefield is celebrating with a weekend of free family fun, including outdoor art activities, paper sculpture workshops and art pods.

Wakefield Cathedral will also be a focal point. On the Tuesday before the race, a graffiti artist is expected to complete spray-painting ‘Allez-Luia’ on the roof of the landmark building.

On race day the cathedral is hosting a VIP reception, family fun and craft activities.

There will also be a family BBQ and refreshments, and cycling themed arts and crafts in the refurbished nave will continue following the ceremonial start of the race.
