Witness appeal: Man robbed outside Wakefield takeaway

The 19-year-old victim was robbed of his phone, wallet and tobacco outside Darnley Fisheries, Alverthorpe Road, at 2.30am on Saurday (June 20).

Police have issued a witness appeal and particularly want to speak to a driver who had asked the victim for a light shortly before the attack, which was carried out by one of two men.

They are described as being white and aged in their early to mid 20s. The first suspect is described as over 6ft tall, wearing a white t-shirt or thin white jumper. He spoke with a local accent. The second suspect is described as wearing a black jacket and black tracksuit bottoms.

The robbery victim was walking up Alverthorpe Road when he was approached by the two suspects outside Darnley Fisheries, with one of the men asking him for a cigarette. While giving this man a cigarette, a car pulled up alongside the group and the male driver asked for a light which the victim has also provided. Shortly after the man drove away, one of the suspects assaulted the victim and took his phone, wallet and tobacco, before both ran off in the direction of the city centre.

Detective Constable Rachel Panther, of Wakefield District CID, said: “While we do not believe that the driver who stopped would have seen the robbery itself he may be able to help provide further information about the two suspects. He is described as being white and aged in his mid 20s and was driving what the victim described as a small car. We would urge this man to come forward, even if he doesn’t think he has any relevant information.

“We are also keen to speak to anyone else who was in the area who either witnessed the robbery itself or the circumstances leading up to or following the incident.”
