Cycling festival will follow Tour De Yorkshire

Youngsters and families will be able to pedal in the tyre tracks of top cyclists when Pontefract Grand Prix cycling festival returns this year.

Hundreds of spectators and riders are expected to take part in the cycling celebration, which will be held just weeks after the Tour De Yorkshire passes through the town.

After the success of last year’s event, the festival will feature a closed road circuit on a traffic-free route as well as stalls and entertainment.

Elite cyclists, schools, men, women and veterans will also battle it out in a series of races during the event that takes place on Sunday, June 12.

Organiser Ashley Brown, from BBM Revolution Cycling Club in Knottingley, said: “Last year’s event was a huge success and we are really fortunate to have increased support from Wakefield Council and TLS events to help spread the festival through the town and create a day that can be enjoyed by all the family.”

New categories have been opened and the popular free family ride will return for all ages and abilities.

A fun fair, bouncy castles, food stalls and entertainment will also be on offer as well as races in the town as part of the festival.

Mr Brown said he hopes the event will get more people involved in cycling.

He added: “This year it’s not just about cycling enthusiasts, but maybe we can bring some new people into the sport and that’s the aim of the event really.

“We have more races and many more activities throughout the day. We are even planning a running race which will open up opportunities for the community to get involved in the competitive side of the day.

“But it really is the festival element of the day that will see the biggest change for us in June.”
