Apparently referring to rival bids from different areas of the county for more devolved control of local affairs, the Prime Minister was recorded off-camera saying, “We thought people in Yorkshire hated everyone else - we didn’t realise they hated each other.”

A transcript of the exchange was posted on Twitter by BBC correspondent Alex Forsyth.

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh posted a tweet in response to Mr Cameron’s comment.

She said: “The mask slips....What the PM really thinks of Yorkshire, when he thinks the camera is off.”
