The college hopes to knock down an existing single storey building on Burton Street during the Easter holidays.

The demolition will pave the way for construction work to begin on the university centre, which will be built on the same site.

College principal Sam Wright said: “We look forward to the dated existing building being cleared to make way for a modern addition on what is a prominent position in the centre of Wakefield.

“This will complement the other recent developments on our city campus and the wider Civic Quarter, as well as providing a prominent focal point for higher level skills development in Wakefield.”

The university centre, also known as an advanced skills and innovation hub, will offer higher level apprenticeships, degree courses and professional qualifications.

It aims to increase the number of people in the district with higher level skills.

And the building will also include space for local businesses and employers to work with students and college staff.

The demolition is subject to final arrangements with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, which have granted £3.3m to fund the university centre.

The building is expected to be completed in April 2017.
