From documentaries to pictures for film school graduate

Nick Singleton, 28, of Sandal, had his future mapped out in cinema but he also caught the bug for taking pictures.

He said: “I have always been interested in film and photography since I was a kid. I went on to study film and TV production at York St John University”.

After graduating Mr Singleton worked in the cafe at The Hepworth while producing photography and film as a part time business. He learnt more and more shutter skills. In 2014 he was taken on full time by photographer David Lindsay who is one of his influences, along with brother and artist Andy Singleton and neon artist Richard Wheater.

He added: “Film and photography have always crossed over for me in my mind. The difficult aspect is switching gears as although the two are similar, it’s very different putting together a film to stills photography in terms of technique and how you approach a day’s shooting. My work is mostly documentary so I am out and about shooting and most of the time you only get one shot at successfully capturing the story.”

Mr Singleton is based The Art House on Drury Lane. He added: “I think the creative scene in Wakefield is on the up and up. There are so many independent artists and collectives going on which are joining up. I think its changed the feel of the whole city, and I know when people visit from other places they are always surprised at how much the culture the city has for such a small place.”
