A van driver had a lucky escape after his vehicle was struck by a HGV.
Fire crews from Wakefield, Ossett and Dewsbury were called to the M1, between junction 40 (Ossett) and junction 41 (Carr Gate) at around 10.10pm last night (Monday) to reports of a collision.
It was thought a heavy rescue unit would have to be used at the scene, but the 52-year-old driver of the van managed to get out of his vehicle before emergency services arrived.
He was taken to hospital, thought to be suffering from head injuries. The driver of the HGV was uninjured.
Crews stayed at the scene until paramedics arrived and police are now investigating the cause of the crash.
Two lanes were closed on the motorway while emergency services worked at the scene.
