Balne Lane Fields is popular with dog walkers and families living on and around the Peacock estate to the north of Wakefield College.

Now, the local council says it has looked at the prospect of making the nine-hectare site more attractive.

Deputy leader Jack Hemingway commented on a Facebook Q&A session about the issue, in response to a local dog walker who said that benches had been dismantled and that litter was a problem because of a lack of bins.

Asked if the area could be kept more "safe and clean", Coun Hemingway said: I used to live down Balne Lane and I've been around those fields many times.

"Recently I have had discussions with local councillors for that area about a scheme for some improvement works to Balne Lane fields.

"These would include more benches and bins and some nature improvements.

"The discussions are at an early stage but we are considering improvements down there.

"I know it's one of the few green spaces people living in that area have, so hopefully there's more to come on that soon."
