As sunny weather saw thousands of people flock to parks and open spaces, the council said they had received reports that people were failing to follow social distancing guielines.

Under current government advice, groups of up to six people can meet in public places, but those who do not live together must stay at least two feet apart at all times.

Cloun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Communities and Poverty, said: “We are very lucky that our district has some wonderful parks and green spaces and it is lovely to see people enjoying them during this spell of sunny weather.

“However, even though the Government has started to ease the lockdown, this is a really crucial time for our country and we must still follow the social distancing guidance, to manage the spread of coronavirus.

“I urge people to be considerate of others around them and continue to support the national effort to control the virus and save lives.”

People have also expressed anger after thousands of pieces of litter were abandoned at parks and beauty spots across the district over the weekend.

Coun Cummings reminded people that litter should be taken home if it cannot be safely disposed of, and should avoid lighting barbecues or campfires in the parks.

She said: "It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure our parks and green spaces are a clean and welcoming place for all to enjoy. We are working hard to empty the bins as often as we can, but if they are full please take your rubbish home.

"There is no excuse for littering.”

The Council is reminding people not visit the parks if they are unwell, as they should be following the 7-day self-isolation guidance, or if a member of their household is unwell and they should be following the 14 day stay at home guidance.
