New exhibition at National Coal Mining Museum for reopening day

The Light in the Darkness gallery will explore the contributions of Sir Humphry Davy and others to the flame safety lamp - a device that saved countless lives, the museum said.

The National Coal Mining Museum is set to reopen on August 5. Last month a historic pit wheel was lifted into place at the National Coal Mining Museum after been restored at a cost of more than £200,000.

It is thought to be one of the last remaining timber headstocks in Europe
