EU referendum: Wakefield backs Brexit by a huge majority

People in the Wakefield district voted for Brexit by a resounding majority.

Results from the Wakefield Council area show 66.3 per cent of people who voted opted to leave the European Union, compared to 33.6 per cent who wanted to stay in.

On a turnout of 71.22 per cent, 116,165 people voted for Brexit and 58,877 voted to Remain in Wakefield.

Nationally, the Brexit side won by 51.9 to 48.1 per cent.

That means the UK is set leave the European Union - a result which has led to Prime Minister David Cameron’s resignation.

He will step down by October after campaigning for the UK to stay in the EU.

Following the result, the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as financial markets reacted to the results.
