Castleford Tigers have confirmed that highly rated young centre Greg Minikin has signed a two-year contract extension to keep him at the club until at least 2019.

Minikin joined the Tigers from York City Knights at the start of the 2016 season after impressing in the Kingstone Press League One and made a successful jump up to Super League level after being given his chance in 2016.

He made his debut for the Knights back in 2012 and after impressing in 2014 and 2015 he made the jump up to Super League with Castleford batting off other clubs for his signature.

In his first season at Cas, the 21-year-old played in 16 games and scored six tries after making his debut against Leeds Rhinos over the Easter period. His efforts saw him voted young player of the year.

Minikin was already in contract for 2017, but his new deal adds two more years onto that.

After signing the contract, he said: “I’m pleased to have extended my contract at Cas. When my agent, Craig told me Cas wanted to extend I was over the moon. I love it here at Cas and I’m really excited for next season.

“We have a bright future here at Castleford and we’re aiming to win some silverware if not next year then in the near future.

“I’m really excited with what is going on at the club and we’re really moving forward.”

Tigers head coach Daryl Powell was pleased that Minikin chose to stay with the Tigers.

He said: “Greg Minikin became a real go to last year. After we received so many injuries to the squad he quickly showed that he is at home in Super League, from his first game against Leeds all the way through the season he challenged defences with his natural running style.

“I have no doubt he will be a big player in Castleford Tigers’ future. I’m delighted he has extended his contract and look forward to seeing him improve further in the coming seasons.”

Castleford chief executive Steve Gill added: “Greg has made some massive strides in his development since joining us from the York City Knights. He has made a remarkable transition into Super League and we look forward to watch him further develop in the coming years.”
