From the newsroom, to the printers and delivery to the shops, your Pontefract and Castleford Express has already been on quite a journey before it reaches your fingertips.

But one edition went 3,300 miles further than most, when it was flown to New York to join a family on a special occasion trip.

Pauline Newton packed the February 15 newspaper when she travelled to the American city to celebrate her daughter Tara Farrar’s 30th birthday earlier this year.

The pair, with Pauline’s youngest daughter Taymee Newton and her friend Molly Parr, pulled out the copy to have a quick read and pose for pictures in the bustling Times Square.

Pauline said: “We always get the paper and we thought it would be a good laugh to take it.

“It was something different and we got some memorable photographs for my daughter’s birthday.

“We were there for five nights and we actually ended up carrying the paper around for three days, waiting for it to stop raining so we could get it out and get some pictures.”

Tara and Taymee were both born in Pontefract and raised in Castleford and taking the newspaper with them meant they had a connection to home whilst celebrating in the Big Apple.

The front page story featured a £750m Castleford masterplan, which aims to creat 6,500 jobs and 4,500 homes in their town.

Pauline said: “Tara thought it was a really good idea to remember her 30th by.

“There were a few people looking when we got it out and started taking photos. It was just a laugh.”
