Family flee home after arson attack

A woman and two children were forced to escape from their burning home after arsonists torched two sheds in its back garden.

The family were asleep in their home on Huntwick Crescent, Featherstone, when they were woken by the family dog and found the sheds alight at around 2.30am on Sunday, August 30.

The fire then spread to the home causing significant damage.

A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the incident has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Det Con Laura Wheatley, of Wakefield CID, said: “We are investigating this incident which has caused extensive damage to the property. Fortunately, the occupants were able to get out of the house safely and were unhurt.

“I would like to speak to anyone who has information about the fire, which is being treated as a suspected arson attack, or who may know the person responsible.

“Anyone who has information is asked to contact Wakefield District CID on 101.

“Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”
