To commemorate the anniversary, the Express will be running a series of features to remember the heroics of the brave soldiers, sailors and airmen from our region sent overseas to fight. Thousands of whom never returned.

Starting next week we will be serialising the diary of soldier George Kellett based in France.

After receiving a diary in a Christmas parcel, he recorded the whole year, 1918, in his diary.

It details his life as a soldier including letters from home, pay arrangements, games of draughts, working on a rifle range and digging trenches.

Mr Kellett’s family gave the diary to Wakefield Museums. Extracts from his diary will also be tweeted throughout the year @WW1-Diary on Twitter.

As well as the diaries, we will feature your stories of your relatives who went to war, passed down through the generations.

We will also be taking a look back at what life was like on the home front with a weekly round up of the news from 1914 as it appeared in the Wakefield Express. Also we will be printing the names of fallen soldiers remembered on war memorials across the five towns.

There will also be coverage of events taking part to mark the anniversary. We already have some amazing stories of bravery and heroics to share with you, but we want to hear more. So if you have any memories or stories, or photographs we should be featuring just get in touch.
