A former care home which has been empty for four years could finally be demolished this summer.

Beacon House, on Field Lane in Upton, accommodated 20 residents when it closed in 2014.

Wakefield District Housing (WDH), who own the property, asked for planning permission last year to convert the derelict building into a small housing estate with a mix of two and three bedroom houses.

No decision has yet been reached on that application and WDH have now made a separate request for the former care home, which was originally built in the 1970s, to be knocked down.

If given permission, the work would be carried by Thomas Crompton Demolitions.

The application says that asbestos needs to be removed from the property and that the work could be carried out as early as later this month.
