Former Outwood and Morley MP Ed Balls and sports pundit Chris Kamara will compete to impress tough judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry in the charitable version of one of the nation’s most popular television shows.

They will take to the Bake Off tent with Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh and writer Victoria Coren Mitchell to raise money for BBC Sport Relief.

Father-of-three Mr Balls is no stranger to the kitchen.

In 2013, he took part in Asda’s Come Dine With MP competition and the 48-year-old Norwich City chairman says he has always baked birthday cakes for the three children he has with Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper.

Mr Balls, who was taught to cook by his mum, told the One Show earlier this month: “It’s such a brilliant show to get the chance to take part in. Being inside the tent, it was exhausting and tense. You expected it to be a bit of a laugh for Sport Relief but actually everyone took it really seriously. It’s totally out of your comfort zone to be cooking on TV.”

Former Leeds United favourite Chris Kamara agreed to the show as a rookie baker. His wife Anne gave him a crash cooking course at their Wakefield home in the run up to filming the show.

Mr Kamara said: “Paul didn’t pull any punches on telling me what he thought of my bakes and Mary had to tell him off for being a bit harsh.

“But it was amazing being in the tent and so much fun. I couldn’t bake to save my life but it was a top experience.

“Sports Relief do a heck of a lot of good both at home and overseas and it was wonderful to be a part of that.”

Watch how the pair got on at 8pm next Wednesday, February 3, on BBC One.
