Former Wakefield Trinity star Derek Turner dies

Former Wakefield Trinity Wildcats star Derek ‘Rocky’ Turner has died at the age of 82.

Mr Turner was an £8,000 record signing from Oldham by Wakefield in March 1959 before going on to coach at Castleford.

He also played for Yorkshire and Great Britain and won seven trophies in five years during his time at Wakefield.

Mr Turner, of Ossett, became the first rugby league captain to lead a club to three Wembley final successes after Wakefield won the Challenge Cup in 1959, 1961 and 1962.

He retired in 1966 due to an injury and also coached at Leeds before returning to Wakefield as coach in the 1980s.
