Free parking for Christmas shoppers in Wakefield, Castleford and Pontefract

Free parking will be provided for shoppers across the district in the run-up to Christmas.

Wakefield Council is offering a free service after 3pm on Thursdays at its on-street parking spaces and off-street car parks, exlcuding Merchant Gate multi-storey in November and December.

The free parking will be on offer in Wakefield, Castleford and Ponteract on Thursday, November 27 , December 4, December 11 and December 18.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fall on Thursdays and are Bank Holidays when parking is already free.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for transportation and highways, said: “We have offered free Christmas parking in our car parks for some years now and we are confident that it does encourage people to come into our shopping centres.

“We hope it will do the same this year and look forward to welcoming visitors.”

Signs will be displayed on or next to parking payment machines to publicise the dates that free parking is available.

The free parking is not available in privately owned car parks.

Shops at Trinity Walk will be open until 8pm every Thursday and Monday to Friday from December 15 until December 23.

The Ridings shopping centre will open until 8pm on Thursdays from November 27 until December 18 and will also offer free parking after 3pm on these dates.
