THERE was a record turnout at Featherstone’s annual gala last week as the community flocked to Purston Park.
The festivities were kicked off by gala queen Katie Crawshaw who led the parade in her limousine from St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School to the park.
Revellers took part in fancy dress competitions and sports activities, complemented by displays from gymnastic teams and dance troupes.
Graham Wilson, town council clerk, said: “The turnout was probably the best in living memory and everyone enjoyed the day. We had a wonderful day with the sun shining on a record turnout.”
As well as a coaching display by Featherstone Rovers’ players, more than 40 stalls raised money for good causes, including town mayor Bill Mulroe’s charity.
Mr Mulroe said: “We were blessed with glorious weather. The event was a great success and brought the whole community together.
“The gala gives an opportunity for local organisations to raise funds for good causes and I was delighted that so many were able to participate and demonstrate the work they do for the community.”
