Castleford Tigers boss Daryl Powell admitted to being disappointed at seeing his skipper sin-binned during the 26-12 loss to Wigan Warriors in their latest First Utility Super League game.

Luke Gale spent 10 minutes off the field after being yellow carded for showing his frustration and complaining about decisions made by referee Phil Bentham.

Powell was unhappy with his actions even if he could sympathise with his player’s frustrations.

He told the Express: “It was disappointing from Luke Gale that he got frustrated with the referee and he’ll be disappointed with himself.

“He was off the field for 10 minutes and that has a big impact on the team when you lose your captain and your main controlling influence at the moment.

“You don’t want to see that and it’s something we need to get out of our game regardless.

“You get things go against you and you’ve just got to cop them on the chin and just get on with it.”

Despite criticism of the refereeing performance of Bentham from fans, Powell refused to use this as an excuse for his side’s defeat.

He said: “I won’t be blaming anybody but ourselves. I think we’ve got to be better than what we’re delivering to win those types of games.

“There were a couple of things that didn’t quite go our way from the officials, but I don’t think that had too much to do with the result.

“There were a couple of tough calls, but they happen and it was more about us, just not playing quite as well as wanted to and as a result they controlled field position on us.

“There were a few thinks there that we could feel a little bit annoyed about, but overall we’ve just got to improve if we want to win those games.”
