GREAT-grandma Helen Walker doesn’t usually like to disturb her husband while he’s sleeping – but decided she could wake him up to tell him they’d won £1.4m on the National Lottery.

The 78-year-old, of Kippax, discovered they’d hit the jackpot at 11.30pm on Saturday night, shortly after her husband Stanley, also 78, had gone to bed.

She said: “I turned on the TV to check and when I saw that our numbers matched I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know whether to wake Stanley up or tell him in the morning, but I couldn’t keep it to myself and I had to wake him up.

“When I told him he couldn’t believe it either – in fact it took him half an hour to get out of bed and come downstairs. Neither of us could sleep though and on Sunday we told our children and grandchildren the good news.

“We had a small celebration and I had my first drink since Christmas day. I had some champagne and my favourite – Amaretto.”

Mr and Mrs Walker, who have been playing the National Lottery since it began, won £1,466,667. Their biggest previous win was £450.

They have two children, David, 54, and Patricia, 52, seven grandchildren and will welcome their fifth great grandchild to the world later this year.

Stanley said: “We plan on saving a bit of the money for ourselves, to make our retirement more comfortable, and then we’ll share the rest with our family.

“Every year we go to Florida, which we plan on doing again this year, but this time we will be able to travel in style and go first class.

“I still can’t believe we’ve won though – it really hasn’t sunk in. I’m sure as time progresses more will get added to the shopping list.”
