Grandson leads tributes to his ‘loving, selfless and caring’ grandfather who has died from coronavirus

The grandson of a Wakefield man who has died after contracting coronavirus has paid tribute to his loving grandfather, saying "I wouldn't be where I am today without him."

Peter Reynolds, from Crigglestone, died at Pinderfields Hospital on Wednesday, April 15 after contracting the virus.

The 77-year-old was a beloved husband, father and grandfather with his grandson, Alex Reynolds, saying his death has touched many.

Alex said: “Losing my grandad has been very hard, he was a father figure to me.

“He always supported me in everything I did and I wouldn’t be where I am now without him."

Peter served in the army and RAF for 25 years before becoming a tutor and giving support to the unemployed and disadvantaged in his community.

Boxer Alex said: "I can’t thank him enough for what he did. He supported me through all of my boxing fights - he was always the first person to buy a ticket. He was my biggest supporter.

“It's been really hard. The hardest part was not knowing if he was ok with not being able to see him while he was in hospital.

“He always said that no matter how down you feel, it goes on, life goes on.”

Alex, 21, said he moved in with his grandad in 2011 while still at school.

He said: “I was failing every subject and he would sit me down every day and teach me.

"The proudest moment was when I finished with straight As. I couldn’t have done it without him.

“I also remember my first night out. He sat up and waited to come and pick me up at 4.30am, just to make sure I got home safe. That was just who he was.

Alex has now launched a fundraising campaign in memory of his grandad and has already raised £1,400 for Pinderfields ICU Ward where Peter spent his final days.

Alex will also be competing in a boxing event ,at a date to be confirmed, with the title being named after his beloved grandfather.

“I can’t thank everyone who has donated and supported us enough." Alex said. "And if you can spare anything, it's all for a fantastic cause.

“The staff at Pinderfields were fantastic with my grandad and I would like to give something back to them."
