Great Get Together Iftaar aims to unite all faiths in memory of Jo Cox

West Yorkshire Police and humanitarian charity the Penny Appeal have organised a Great Fun Day and Iftaar at Wakefield College’s Thornes Park campus on June 17.

They want children and adults of all faiths and none to unite in the spirit of the Islamic festival of Ramadan and in tribute to former Batley and Spen MP Mrs Cox and her work to improve community relations.

Chief Superintendent Mabs Hussain, district commander of Wakefield Police, said: “In light of recent tragic events, particularly, I think it is important for us to celebrate our different cultures and support any initiative which can help us all learn more about each other and build friendships between neighbourhoods.”

The event, which will take place from 5pm, will include stalls, activities, entertainment, and sporting challenges.

It will be followed by a free three course meal for all to enjoy, when the Muslim community break their fast.

Penny Appeal head of programmes Harris Iqbal: “Wakefield’s Great Fun Day coincides during Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, which reminds every one of the importance of charity, forgiveness, compassion and mercy.”

The event will form part of the nationwide Great Get Together a year on from Mrs Cox’s death and will support The Big Iftaar initiative to build relationships between people of all faiths with the view to creating a more integrated society.
