Grieving Castleford community is pulling together, says councillor

A councillor has told of her hope that community spirit will slowly help the residents of Allerton Bywater come to terms with the killing of local mother Geraldine Newman and two of her children.

People from across the area attended a church service on Sunday to remember 51-year-old Mrs Newman and the lost youngsters, 11-year-old Shannon and six-year-old Shane.

Those attending the service included Kippax and Methley councillors Mary Harland, James Lewis and Keith Wakefield.

Coun Harland said: “This tragedy has brought a sense of real shock and disbelief.

“It will take a long time to recover but the community in the village is a strong one and hopefully that will help the healing process which needs to be gone through.”

Shop manager Mrs Newman and her children were killed by her 42-year-old estranged husband Paul Newman, from Normanton, who later jumped to his death from a cliff in Wales.
