Gruelling trek raises thousands

A group of friends from Glass Hougton have raised more than £2,000 for charity after taking part in a gruelling coast to coast walk across the country.

Mark Hanmore, Simon Birch, Mark Jordan and Steven Brookes took part in the walk from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay, in North Yorkshire in September.

Since then the quartet have raised a total of £2,367.17 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Mark Hanmore, 49, of Park Road, said, “We had never done anything like it before and we hadn’t done much walking at all.

“It was very difficult especially in the Lake District where we found it hard but luckily we had good weather in September.

“We chose Yorkshire Air Ambulance after the M62 hen party crash near Pontefract in April and thought it was a good cause to give money to.”

Although the Yorkshire Air Ambulance did not attend the crash – which killed 18-year-old Bethany Jones – thousands of pounds has been raised across the area since the accident.

Mr Hanmore also thanked George V WMC, the Houghton pub and the Griffin pub in Castleford and members of the public for their donations.
