Detectives are still hunting for a gang of armed robbers who raided a jewellers in Pontefract town centre yesterday (Thursday).

Police said a group of four men - one brandishing a firearm - entered Kingston Jewellers on Ropergate at around 2.35pm.

They threatened staff in the store before making off with a large quantity of jewellery in a burgundy coloured Rover 75 estate car which was later found burnt out on wasteland on Wakefield Road near the junction with Jubilee Way.

No-one was injured in the incident.

DI Steve Greenbank, of Wakefield CID, said: “We are actively searching for these men and advise anyone who may see them not to approach them.

“We are also looking for a silver Vauxhall Astra estate in connection with the robbery.

“Staff at the jewellers were shaken by what happened but thankfully no-one was injured.”

The store remains closed today (Friday) and a message on its Facebook page said: “We would like to thank all the people working on and who happened to be on Ropergate for helping the police with their enquiries after the events of yesterday. We hope things will be back to normal on Saturday.”

Anyone with any information should call Wakefield CID on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 55111.
