Help create Yorkshire breadstick for bakery in Wakefield

A bakery is challenging its customers to come up with a new Yorkshire-inspired product to hit the shelves in honour of Yorkshire Day on August 1.

To mark the launch of a new ‘deli range’ Thomas the Baker - which has stores in Wakefield and Castleford - is looking for inspiration for a Yorkshire flavour breadstick, to join the three new Mediterranean-inspired varieties on the bakery’s shelves. Rather than the traditional, hard breadstick, the family firm of bakers has come up with a unique recipe for a soft variety which uses sourdough, traditional Italian flour and extra virgin olive oil. All the breadsticks are hand finished and undergo a long, slow fermentation process for additional flavour.

The winner will see their product sold across the 30 stores in the Thomas’ group, and will also receive a hamper of goodies to enjoy. To submit their idea, budding chefs can either pick up an entry form in store or enter via Twitter @thomasthebaker. The winning entry will be chosen on Yorkshire Day by a panel of bakery experts.

The three flavours of breadstick currently available are Specifically Olive, with kalamata olives, sweet peppers, artichokes and a hint of chilli; Pomodoro, with sun dried tomatoes, sea salt, Mediterranean herbs and a touch of garlic; and Formaggio with cheese, mustard powder and a dash of chilli.

Simon Thomas, general manager at Thomas the Baker, said: “Being a Yorkshire company through and through, we like to do something to mark Yorkshire Day – and with us just launching the deli range, it seemed like a great combination. With Italian-inspired breadsticks and the right Yorkshire flavours, it should be a match made in heaven!”

Entries must be received by July 29. For more information go to www.thomasthebaker.co.uk or twitter.com/thomasthebaker
