High winds caused a roof to blow off a row of flats in Knottingley yesterday (Sunday).

Firefighters from Pontefract and the technical rescue unit from Cleckheaton were called to Pinewood Place at around 11.45am.

On arrival they found that a roof from a row of six flats above shops on the road had blown off and landed on the precinct.

A spokesman from Pontefract fire station said: “If it had happened on Saturday then people could have been killed, it was just lucky that it was on a Sunday and no-one was around because of the wind. The whole roof covering had blown off.”

The roof also brought down two street lights. No-one was injured in the incident.
