Horbury Show came to a stand still as memorial plane flew past

The fly past took place 74 years to the day since Horbury and Ossett’s own spitfire was shot down during the Second World War.

The two communities had rallied together in 1940, as part of the war effort, to buy the plane but it was destroyed after only nine days of service on June 28, 1941.

Another spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight circled Carr Lodge Park three times during the show. The 19th annual event featured 80 stalls and attractions both old and new including an owl and falconry display, vintage cars, craft stalls, a dog show and majorette performances.

Bill Sutton, one of the organisers, said: “I think it was probably the busiest in terms of the number of people we had between noon and 4.30pm.

“It was certainly the first time that we have been featured on Radio Leeds because of the traffic in Horbury. We had lots of people coming in and out all day and our wardens and the neighbourhood policing officers did a great job managing that.

“The weather was superb after the early morning showers. Everybody seemed to enjoy it.

“The falconry display went down well again and the strong man competition drew in some good crowds as did the Punch and Judy show. And everybody stopped still to watch the Spitfire fly past.

“John Faulkner ,president of the Horbury and Ossett Rotary Club, did a cracking job of organising it and a big thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers who helped out.”

The rotary club raised around £10,000 for local charities and good causes on the day and it is estimated other charities and community organisations raised a further £15-20,000.
