An immigration enforcement team from the Home Office visited New Jade City Chinese takeaway, Barnsley Road, to carry out checks on workers.

A 43-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, both from China, tried to get away through the back doors but were caught by officers. Checks revealed they were both failed asylum seekers and they have now been detained ready for deportation.

The takeaway was served with a notice warning the owners that they could face a fine of up to £40,000 - £20,000 per illegal worker - unless they can prove they carried out the proper right to work checks.

Nobody from New Jade City was available for comment.

Assistant director Phillippa Russell, from Home Office Immigration Enforcement, said: “People with no right to be in the UK should know that they face arrest and removal from the country.

“Businesses who employ them are defrauding the taxpayer, undercutting genuine employers and denying work to legitimate job hunters.

“We are happy to work with employers who want to play by the rules but those who break the law will face the consequences.
